A nipple shield is a thin silicone cover worn during a feed, generally used for a short period while an underlying problem is being sorted out, such as a difficult latch, flat or inverted nipples, or a baby transitioning from bottle to breast.

They are genuinely useful, but they are a bridge rather than a destination. Used long-term without support they can reduce how much milk the baby transfers and affect supply, which is why they are best used with a midwife or lactation consultant helping you work back to feeding without one. How to Use

• Sterilise before first use and clean after every feed
• Wash your hands, then centre the shield over the nipple
• Check your baby is swallowing during the feed and gaining weight as expected
• Inspect before each use and replace if the silicone is torn, cloudy or sticky
• Work with a midwife or lactation consultant on moving away from the shield when ready
• Seek advice promptly if feeding is painful, or if your baby is not gaining weight
