Expressing and storing milk

Freshly expressed breast milk keeps for around four hours at room temperature, up to four days in the fridge and about six months in a freezer. Pre sterilised storage bags lie flat once frozen, which saves a surprising amount of room compared with rigid bottles.

Fill each bag to about three quarters, since milk expands as it freezes, and label it with the date before it goes in. Nipple shields and lanolin creams cover the comfort side of feeding. A midwife or lactation consultant can help you size a shield properly, because the wrong size tends to make latching harder rather than easier.

Frequently asked questions

How long does expressed breast milk keep?

Around four hours at room temperature, up to four days in the fridge and about six months in the freezer. Label every bag with the date.

How full should I fill a storage bag?

About three quarters full. Milk expands as it freezes, so a completely full bag can split at the seal.

What size nipple shield do I need?

Shields come in different diameters, commonly between 16mm and 24mm. A midwife or lactation consultant can measure and advise, since the wrong size makes latching harder.

Can milk storage bags be reused?

No. They are pre sterilised and made for single use, and reusing them risks contamination.
