Oil works differently from a lotion: rather than adding water to the skin, it seals in the water already there, which is why it belongs on damp skin straight after the bath rather than on skin that has fully dried.

Benefits

• Applied to damp skin, oil forms a barrier that slows water loss. Applied to dry skin it does far less, which is why the timing is the whole trick
• The slip is what makes it the better choice for massage. Lotion absorbs too fast to keep a massage going for long
• A common use is cradle cap. Massaging a little oil into the scalp, leaving it briefly, then gently brushing and washing helps lift the flakes without scratching

How to Use

• Apply to damp skin straight after the bath
• Warm a small amount between your palms first
• Massage in gently, avoiding the eyes and mouth
• For cradle cap, massage a little into the scalp, leave briefly, then brush gently and wash out
• Take care afterwards, as oil makes both baby and hands slippery
