Using tools at home

Treat at home skincare tools as an occasional addition rather than a daily habit. Derma rollers with very short needles are used at most once a week, on clean skin, with the roller disinfected before and after every session and replaced regularly. Facial steamers are usually run for a few minutes at a time before cleansing.

Hygiene is the step people skip and the one that matters most. Clean the tool before and after each use, keep it to yourself rather than sharing it, and stop straight away if the skin becomes irritated. Leave strong acids and retinoids out of the routine on any day you use a roller, since combining the two is the usual cause of trouble.
