Which type to use

Ear thermometers read the infrared heat coming off the eardrum and return a result in a second or two, which is what makes them practical with a restless child. Forehead and non contact models are quicker still and useful when someone is asleep. Digital stick thermometers take longer to settle but are inexpensive and dependable.

A normal adult temperature sits around 36.1C to 37.2C, and a fever is generally counted from 38C upwards. Readings vary by site, so compare like with like and stick to the same thermometer when tracking someone across a few days. For babies under three months, contact a doctor about any fever rather than managing it at home.
